Society tells us we need a bachelor’s degree or higher to land a well-paying job, but how much truth is there to that statement? While a degree can earn you a higher salary, not all high paying jobs require a college education. As a matter of fact, 345 out the 787 occupations listed by BLS in their employment projections report requires just a high school diploma. And some higher paying jobs require specialized training rather than a college degree. The next time you search for jobs on a job search site like JobTonic.com, be on the lookout for these four jobs that don’t require a degree. 1. Supervisors of Police and Detectives Median Salary: $78,270 A manager or supervisor of police and detectives is responsible for maintaining logs, preparing reports and managing departmental records. They also explain police operation, and inform personnel of regulation changes, changes to the law and new police work techniques. Additionally, they will coordinate and supervise criminal case investigations. While a college degree is recommended for this position, it’s not required. Certification from the DCJS is beneficial and will improve your chances of being hired in this position. Most managers or supervisors of police and detectives start out as police officers themselves and progress to supervisory positions over time. 2. Elevator Installers and Repairers Median Salary: $76,650 As the job title suggests, elevator installers and repairers install, maintain and repair elevators, moving walkways and escalators. Those who work in this position are often required to carry heavy parts and equipment. Some are on call 24 hours a day or will be required to work overtime to repair essential equipment. You only need a high school diploma or equivalent to be an elevator installer and repairer. On-the-job training as an apprentice will provide you with the skills you need to excel in this career. 3. Nuclear Power Reactor Operators Median Salary: $74,990 A nuclear power reactor operator operates or controls nuclear reactors. Tasks include starting and stopping equipment, moving control rods, recording data in logs, and monitoring and adjusting controls. In case of an emergency, operators will implement emergency procedures. In some cases, they may help determine the cause of an abnormality and recommend a solution. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this job as well as licensing. Hands-on and classroom training will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to enter this field. 4. Detectives and Criminal Investigators Median Salary: $74,300 Detectives and criminal investigators conduct criminal investigations and help prevent or solve crimes. They might work for a state, local or federal agency. A detective or criminal investigator is often referred to as a special agent. Special agents gather facts for criminal investigations. They compile and examine evidence, and will also interview both witnesses and suspects. If enough evidence is gathered, they will formally charge a suspect. In most cases, these agents specialize in a particular department of law enforcement, such as homicide, fraud or drug trafficking. A college degree is not required for this position, but most detectives will start out as police officers. Experience as an officer for up to two years is typically required.
