Posted: October 23, 2017 |
Fall is the perfect time of year to get involved in fun, seasonal activities that take advantage of cooler temperatures and the approaching holiday season. No matter where you live, the fall season offers a plethora of options for both indoor and outdoor recreation. Whether you’d rather explore your adventurous side in the crisp autumn air or cozy up inside and enjoy some of the season’s best treats, you’re sure to find the perfect way to celebrate fall this year among the five great activities below. 1. Enjoy the Fall Foliage Fall just wouldn’t be fall without the changing of the leaves. No matter where you live, there are dozens of great ways to take in the fall foliage and appreciate nature’s stunning time of transformation. For the train buff, consider climbing aboard one of America’s historic railways, such as the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, which takes passengers on a three-mile climb to the summit of Mount Washington. Or, if you’re in Colorado, check out one of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s special seasonal events, including wine and beer tastings, while enjoying stunning views of the San Juan National Forest. If trains aren’t your style, many states also offer ocean and river cruises for a unique perspective on the autumn landscape. American Cruise Lines offer an eight-day Hudson River Cruise that departs from New York City and travels the Hudson in all its fall splendor with guided stops at historic riverside towns, including the infamous Sleepy Hollow. If you’d rather stay on land, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers ample opportunities to enjoy the fall colors through a variety of outdoor activities. Follow “America’s Favorite Drive” as it meanders through some of the Southeast’s most gorgeous fall landscapes. The Parkway website even offers tips for leaf season where you can view area color reports to help you make the most of fall viewing. 2. Celebrate Fall Foods Many kitchen specialty shops offer seasonal cooking courses that will give you the skills to master all the fall classics just in time for Thanksgiving! Learn how to craft sumptuous tarts, pumpkin dishes and hearty autumn stews that will keep you and your dinner guests warm on those cold nights to come. If you’d rather learn new dishes in the comfort of your own kitchen, invite friends over to share recipes for fall favorites or watch online cooking classes from famous chefs on sites like Food Network. 3. Get Crafty With so many traditional crafts associated with the fall season, it’s easy to find classes on crafts like pumpkin carving and fall leaf displays. Local arts-and-crafts supply stores like Michael's offer online and in-store courses on everything from haunted gingerbread houses to pumpkin pom-poms, and community recreation centers often offer seasonal craft sessions in their “senior activities near me” postings. 4. Go Apple Picking Fall’s favorite poet, Robert Frost, was fond of apple picking, and with good reason. Take a visit to your local orchard or cider mill to enjoy fall favorites like hot apple cider and apple doughnuts, and bring home a few bags of fresh local fruits. During fall, many orchards also offer seasonal produce like gourds and pumpkins, and many feature a shop where you can purchase homemade apple butter and jellies. 5. Support Your Local Artists Fall is the season for arts and crafts fairs! Check out your local schools, churches, and community centers for listings, and get a jump on your holiday shopping by perusing the hundreds of handmade and one-of-a-kind items on sale there. Many neighborhoods in larger cities take advantage of fall’s milder weather to host their annual fine arts festivals, where artists, jewelers, and potters sell their wares out-of-doors in a setting far more casual than a fine arts gallery.
