If you own or are considering owning a greyhound you need to be aware that they have very specific dietary requirements. Preservatives and additives are added to many mass market dog foods, and just like we see in children, these hidden extras can have a negative effect on any dog’s behavior. Greyhounds can be particularly affected by chemicals contained within their food, but this can go undetected by their owners. If your dog is a retired or rescued greyhound then you should try and feed it a specialist, quality greyhound food.
Greyhounds are not greedy by nature, so if you feed your dog a specialist food you don’t need to be too worried about excessive feeding. If you want to make sure your greyhound has a glossy coat, bright eyes and healthy skin then look to buy a food product which contains quality fish oils. If the dog food you have purchased does not include fish oils why not try adding a tea spoon of cod liver oil to one of your greyhounds meals. Sardines are also packed full of healthy oils and providing they do not contain bones are a great snack for your dog. Just remember that if you are feeding a dry pet food to any animal it should be served with a bowl of fresh water.
A dog’s digestive system can cope with raw meat easily, it is what they would eat if they had to catch their own dinner. You should avoid feeding raw pork or poultry as these meats can contain bacteria. Please also remember dogs are omnivores and not carnivores. Feeding meat alone will cause malnutrition as will feeding vegetables and cereals alone. Ideally, stick to a quality, specialist pet food as this will contain all the meat your greyhound requires. Your greyhound will be both happy and healthy if fed a daily diet of high quality, specialist greyhound food.
